Turntablism

Turntablism in PerformFX treats a scratch as two independent tracks: the record’s position and speed, plus the crossfader’s open and closed gestures. These pages let you read that motion and audition every FX Library preview against both ahh.wav and fresh.wav.

How to read TTM notation

The diagram is a Turntablist Transcription Methodology (TTM) position-versus-time staff. An upward line is a forward record stroke, a downward line is a backward stroke, and a horizontal line is a hold. Steeper motion means a faster record hand and therefore a higher pitch. Blue motion is audible, dark gray motion is muted by an authored fader closure, and light gray horizontal motion is an intentional hold. Solid white dots mark fader clicks. Open circles mark authored intentional holds only; reversals and anti-click stops have no markers. Light vertical guides show the timing grid. The playhead in each example follows the selected native audio player through the first diagrammed scratch cycle. The playhead restarts each authored cycle during the technique bar, then holds at the right edge at the technique boundary and through release. Choose either source, seek it, or switch sources; the diagram stays aligned to the authored technique.

Pattern, Motion, Rate, Gate, Swing, and Humanize

  • Pattern selects one of the 27 selectable TTM strokes. This is the motion/fader vocabulary available inside FX Params.
  • Motion places the Twiddle or Crab finger-click roll on the forward stroke, both strokes (Orbit), or the back stroke. Other patterns retain Forward without changing their authored geometry.
  • Rate selects the hand-rub reversal rate. On rub-family patterns it chooses 8th or 16th rub timing; on Transformer it chooses the chop subdivision.
  • Gate selects Transformer’s Straight, Swung, or Rhythmic chop rhythm.
  • Swing warps pairs of stroke cycles toward a triplet pocket. The stretched stroke moves and pitches lower while its partner compresses and pitches higher.
  • Humanize adds bounded cue, travel, and back-pull variation to audio. The diagrams deliberately use Humanize: 0% so they show exact authored geometry.

Twenty effects, twenty-seven patterns

The FX Library contains 20 Turntablism effects. They are curated entry points with their own defaults and preview variants; they are not a second pattern vocabulary. Each effect can expose kin patterns through its preview buttons, while the Pattern control remains a shared list of 27 selectable strokes.
