Our Philosophy

We believe that focus is precious and the most important resource you have to achieve true creative flow. The philosophy of Meiji Sampler is simple: maintain focus to achieve that precious flow state and achieve your true creative potential. Recently, movements have emerged which aim to achieve this important principle but never really stuck the landing. Traditionally, music was made in studios where creatives could have access to expensive and specialized equipment and engineering knowledge, with a high barrier to entry. The advent of software and the digital audio workstation lowered the bar significantly, and then music-making applications from Fruity Loops to GarageBand brought the cost of entry another order of magnitude lower. This was a total blessing, but left creatives staring at a screen, many of which were knowledge workers by day and tired of staring at screens by night. Naturally, solutions emerged to try and address this, like the DAWless movement. In a full circle moment, folks started rediscovering vintage ways of making music again that felt more tactile and less virtual. Problem is, we circled all the way back to needing to acquire rare pieces of gear, manage the physical setup and routing of it, and ultimately integrate with software anyway, since most projects eventually arrive at the DAW. Meanwhile, some very exciting developments in software emerged when machine learning and artificial intelligence matured to the point where fascinating creative possibilities emerged. For producers and DJs, stem separation quickly became a powerful tool in your arsenal. Sample management at your fingertips will always be more efficient than painstakingly digging through the crates. Despite the frustrations of staring at screens, software fundamentally does have its advantages. At Meiji Sampler, we believe the middle ground is the most attractive option. We worship tactile creativity, yet live in a digital world. Software can be anything, including intentionally limited. With limitations comes creativity. Yet software brings freedom, including financially, where the cost is free. Our solution? 2 constraints: ditch the mouse, embrace the terminal. With those 2 limitations, software and hardware blend together, with the tactile keyboard connected to your laptop being the instrument, and Meiji Sampler being your canvas. Will we be right? Remains to be seen. Meanwhile, enjoy the process, and see whether you’re able to cultivate a flow state that helps you create your best work to date.
