# Troubleshooting

When Meiji Sampler feels wrong, start with the symptom that matches what you see or hear.

Most issues fall into one of a few buckets: audio setup, recording state, file paths, MIDI routing, or terminal and system behavior.

## Before you go deep

Do these quick checks first:

* confirm the relevant row, tab, or editor is actually focused
* confirm a modal or editor is not open and changing how shortcuts behave
* confirm the terminal, audio device, and project path are the ones you think they are

Use [Error Messages](/reference/error-messages) for exact failure classes, then come back here once you know which subsystem is involved.
