# Make Some Noise

> Go from launch to audible playback as quickly as possible.

## What you'll do

By the end of this page, you will:

* launch Meiji Sampler
* browse a sound source
* preview a sample
* assign it to a pad
* trigger it from the keyboard

## Steps

  <Step title="Open Meiji Sampler and stay on the Create tab">
    The core workflow lives in the `Create` tab. If needed, press `Tab` to switch to it.

  <Step title="Browse to a sound source">
    Use `Up`/`Down` to move, `Enter` or `Right` to open a folder, and `Backspace` or `Left` to go up.

    Vim users: `j`/`k` to move, `l` to open, `h` to go up.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Preview a sample">
    Press `Space` on a selected sound to hear it immediately.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Assign the sample to a pad">
    Press `Shift+1` through `Shift+0` to load the selected sound onto a pad.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Trigger the pad">
    Press `1` through `0` to play the assigned pad.
  </Step>

## If you do not have sounds yet

Use one of these approaches:

* press `p` to open the packs browser and install factory packs
* point Meiji Sampler at your own sample folders
* use an existing library such as Splice if your workflow already depends on it
* if you have Native Instruments, Ableton, or Logic installed, Meiji Sampler will detect those libraries automatically and make them available to browse

## Check your result

You should now be able to:

* select a sample
* hear preview playback
* trigger the same sound from a pad
