# Supported Audio Formats

> Quick reference for the sample formats that are safe to browse, preview, assign, and edit.

# Supported audio formats

The documented sample formats are:

* `WAV`
* `AIFF`
* `AIFF-C`
* `MP3`
* `AAC`
* `M4A`
* `FLAC`
* `OGG`
* `ALAC`
* `CAF`

## What this means in practice

These are the safe formats for:

* browser preview
* pad assignment
* chop and trim workflows
* loop building
* pulling audio into a session without guessing whether it will behave correctly

## Important distinction

This page is about source sample formats.

Meiji Sampler can also write other file types during normal use:

* `WAV` for recordings and bounces
* `MP4` for visualizer exports when enabled

See [File Formats](/reference/file-formats) for the complete list.

## If a file will not load

Check:

* the file is one of the supported formats
* the file is not corrupt
* the path is still valid

Then move to [File And Project Problems](/troubleshooting/files-and-projects) if needed.
