# Terminology

> Learn the fundamentals that make up the Meiji Sampler process

# Definitions

Unsure about a particular concept or phrase? Let's dive in to what everything means.

## Create tab

The main production workspace. This is where pads, loops, scenes, browser focus, and mixing happen.

## Browser

The file and source navigation area where you find sounds, preview them, and move through folders or libraries.

## Pad

A playable sound slot. Pads are triggered with `1-9` and `0`.

Each pad can hold:

* a loaded sample
* trim or chop behavior
* mixer settings on its channel

## Channel

The mixer lane tied to a pad. When you change gain, pan, filters, pitch, saturation, width, reverb, ducking, or stem selection, you are usually changing channel behavior.

## Loop

A recorded performance slot. Loops capture pad triggers over time and can be edited, muted, duplicated, extended, quantized, and arranged.

## Session timing

The timing context set by the first meaningful recorded loop. Later loops sync against that timing. BPM can be overridden in the Settings tab.

## Scene

A stored arrangement of stacked loops which play together. Scenes let you build song sections and transitions, since scenes are played one after another in series.

## Focus

The active pane receiving keyboard input:

* Browser
* Details
* Mixer

## Row

The currently selected workflow row inside the `Create` tab:

* Pads
* Loops
* Scenes

## PerformFX (coming soon)

A separate live-performance effect system available in the `Perform` tab.

## Project

A saved `.meiji` file containing your session state, including pads, loops, scenes, mixer settings, and metadata.

Projects are stored in:

* `~/Documents/Meiji Sampler/Projects/`
