# Browse

> Find sounds quickly with navigation, preview, search, stars, and flat browsing.

# Browse samples

Browsing is the first step in the core workflow because every later step depends on choosing the right source sound.

## What this stage is for

Use the browser to:

* move through folders and libraries
* preview samples instantly
* search large collections
* jump to favorite locations

## Core controls

* `Up`/`Down` (or `k`/`j`) move selection
* `Enter` or `Right` (or `l`) enters a directory
* `Backspace` or `Left` (or `h`) goes up
* `Space` previews the selected sample
* `/` opens fuzzy search
* `*` toggles a star
* `f` toggles flat mode in older docs; verify against your build if this key differs

## What makes browsing fast

Meiji Sampler is optimized for:

* instant preview
* fuzzy search
* deep library access without mouse interaction

Finding great sounds is important, so browsing is a crucial phase in the creative process.

## Good browsing habits

* preview several options before assigning anything
* star directories you return to often with `*`
* use flat or search-based browsing when your library is deep
* keep a small reliable set of starter sounds for fast idea capture

<Info title="Pro tip">
  Sound selection and recording quality matter more than mixing tricks. Choose great sounds up front and save time in the mix later.
</Info>

## Common mistake

New users often assign too early and then keep reassigning sounds. Preview more than you think you need to. It makes the later loop and scene stages smoother.
