# Overdub And Loop Editing

> Layer more material onto an existing loop and reshape it without starting over.

# Overdub and loop editing

Overdub is how you grow a loop instead of replacing it.

## When to use it

* add hats over drums
* add accents after the base groove is working
* test alternate phrases without rebuilding the loop from scratch

## Core edit actions

Loop editing in the current product includes actions such as:

* overdub
* duplicate
* extend
* shorten
* clear
* undo

## Good workflow

1. record the simplest useful loop first
2. overdub one new idea at a time
3. use duplicate or extend when the loop needs room
4. undo quickly if the new layer makes the groove worse

## Creating loop variations

Use `c` to copy a loop into a blank slot.

Then, use overdub to add new elements, giving you a variation of the original.

Use scenes to change when that variation is played instead of its original.

## Why editing matters

Loop editing reduces the number of times you need to reperform a whole idea just to adjust one section.
